experience ...

Dave is not only an experienced performer, but has masses of teaching experience as well. He currently teaches a large number of private pupils and at several schools in the Essex area.

He teaches trumpet (and many other brass instruments too) as well as piano, both classical and jazz theory and caters for all sorts of abilities and ages.

Dave is a former trumpet teacher of the Southampton University Music department as well as Brentwood Music School, Davenant Foundation School, Roydon School, Fawbert & Barnard, Church Langley and Sawyer's Hall College.

Working with youngsters, Dave has also helped put together ensembles and lead bands through the academic year towards end of term performances.

teaching philosophy ...

Every pupil is different, but every pupil has goals. For some this may be grades and others may simply want to play for pleasure. Dave always gears lessons around whatever goals the pupil has in mind.

The experience of teaching at levels ranging from complete beginners to degree students, from ages 6 to 64, means that Dave's approach can be adaptable to suit the pupil's needs. As well as teaching skills specific to the trumpet, he always tries to develop the pupil as an all round musician. This may include a combination of sight reading, theory, history and aural skills.

More advanced or experienced musicians may have come to a stumbling block in their playing. Dave is able to offer advice on a range of topics and concepts from advanced harmony through to compositional ideas and is happy to work with pupils to advance their playing however he can.

Dave doesn't have one particular training method, but uses a variety of material from different sources for exercises.

If you are interested in lessons in trumpet, piano or theory - why not contact Dave to find out what he can offer.
